This exquisitely detailed pendant necklace is from Made Wardika in Bali. The Tree of Life pendant is carved by hand from cow bone and stained with tea to give it an aged, antique appearance. "My name is Made Wardika and I was born and raised in Tampaksiring, Bali. My family's small house is surrounded by farm fields filled with the beautiful Bali scenery. I am the second of three siblings and I started working when I was 11 years old to pay for school due to my family's economic situation. While I was in junior high, I became a woodcarver and kept practicing that craft until I finished high school. After graduating, I painted and decorated carved wood pieces. Then I learned to carve horn, bone and wood..."

Wardika comes from a village that specializes in bone carving, a traditional Balinese art that has been passed from generation to generation. When he was eighteen, he began to work as a bone carver and determined that he would become a master carver. This artist has dramatically improved their livelihood by working with NOVICA. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world. Wardika was a street vendor with an unpredictable income until he joined Novica and shoppers discovered his unique work. Now his Novica sales provide a stable income and he is able to employ artisan assistants to help produce his jewelry.
